Plans are currently underway to more than double Tasmania’s salmon production through major expansion into Storm Bay. Is this sustainable? What are the risks to the Derwent estuary and the sheltered waters of Frederick Henry and Norfolk bays? Is the science adequate to support this expansion, and how does the proposal for ‘adaptive management’ stack up?
Christine Coughanowr is an independent scientist with over 30 years experience in water quality management. She was previously the director of the Derwent Estuary Program, has worked internationally as a consultant, and is a Churchill Fellow.
