Nature, Nurture and Neuroscience Brain plasticity in health and disease

Staff, students and members of the community are invited to attend the seventh in a series of free public lectures: “Nature, Nurture and Neuroscience Brain plasticity in health and disease.”
The lecture will be presented by Professor Anthony J Hannan from the Department of Neuroscience and Mental Health Howard Florey Institute, University of Melbourne.
In recent years the brain’s remarkable ability to reorganise itself, called plasticity, has been the subject of popular interest and neuroscience research. Enhancing brain plasticity may be protective against degenerative diseases of the brain, such as Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, and other forms of dementia.
Prof Hannan has extensively studied the concept of brain plasticity and cognitive reserve, an increase in brain connections which is thought to provide this protective effect. His lecture will discuss Huntington’s disease and other dementias, the effect of cognitive reserve on disease, and how its beneficial effects can be stimulated.
All are welcome to attend this free public lecture. Light refreshments on arrival.
