NEW Gallery Exhibition: Oceans of Innovation

The Hydrodynamic Research Facilities at the Australian Maritime College are comprised of the 100 metre long towing tank established in 1985, the model test basin, established 2001 and the cavitation tunnel in 2012. These facilities utilise cutting edge technologies such as particle image velocimetry (PIV) and Video Motion Capture to model the motions and forces experienced on floating structures and ships the world over.
Oceans of Innovation showcases the evolution of hydrodynamic modelling technology as well as the work of the craftsmen who supply these facilities with scale models for testing. Built to exacting tolerances to meet international standards, the earliest models were of timber construction and hand shaped, while more recently models have been made predominantly from composite materials using computer aided design and manufacture. The measurement values collected from the models cover the full range of forces ships and other structures experience in the marine environment. The technologies used to measure these forces are on display in many of the models and are representative of the innovative drive of the AMC researchers and industry collaborators.
