A lecture presented by Dr Damian Murphy, from the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).
Despite the remoteness of the southern polar stratosphere, it has become clear that this part of our atmosphere has wide ranging climate effects. In response to this influence, atmospheric model upper boundaries are being raised and the sophistication of the representation of this region is increasing.
Two areas of research being carried out at the AAD focus on improving our understanding of the role of chemically driven (through ozone) and dynamically driven (through small scale waves) stratospheric processes. In this seminar, I will describe aspects of both of these areas of research and their relationship to predictions of future climate.
